Hi! My name is Mandie. I am a nurse, wife, mother and aspiring writer. Thanks for reading my blog! I hope you enjoy the story of how we came to adopt our wonderful son and our hopes to adopt a sibling for him.

Throwback Thursday

Three years ago, we brought our little man home from Pocatello. So many people love him and were excited to meet him.

We are grateful that Dimitri has such a big, loving family and that we feel so much support from all of them.

Our Siblings

We thought it would be fun to share a little bit more about our families and our childhoods. Here is a little bit about our siblings.

Adam is the middle of three kids. Growing up in between two sisters is what taught him to be such a gentleman. He has a lot of fun memories of him and his younger sister, Lydia, playing, laughing, and chasing each other when they were young. They are only 11 months apart so they were best friends growing up. His older sister Sheri is a tutor and a nurses’ aide and lives in a small town called Ferndale (in Washington state). His younger sister Lydia is a counselor and lives in Lynden,  which is where Adam grew up and where his parents live.

Mandie is the second oldest of six siblings. There was always something going on in their house.  Her older sister Dezi is married to Seth and they have five boys. Her younger brother TJ is married to Tara and they have four boys. Ginger is the next sister, married to Curtiss. They have three boys and a brand new baby girl. Her little sister Vannessa is married to Blake and they have two girls. Linda is the youngest and is married to Joe. TJ lives in Texas and Vannessa lives in Florida, but the rest of the family all live near each other in Utah. Needless to say, it is a little loud and crazy when we all get together!

Happy Birthday Dimitri!

Dimitri turned three on Saturday!

We started the day having waffles with my sister Linda and her husband Joe at a little diner near our house. Dimitri loves Aunt Linda and Uncle Joe and was really excited when we told them they were coming over.

After breakfast, we went swimming. Dimitri wanted to go down the big waterslide. I thought he’d be scared but he actually loved it and kept asking to go again. He probably went down it at least 10 times. He also asked if he could go off the diving board but we had to draw the line somewhere. Maybe next year.

For dinner we got food from our favorite restaurant, The Bohemian. Dimitri loved the fish and chips and the pierogies. We love that Dimitri has grown-up taste and will eat the foods we love. On his first birthday, he had sushi and loved it.

It was such a fun day celebrating this special little boy! We are so grateful that he’s been in our family for three years. Happy birthday Dimitri! Thank you for bringing so much happiness to our family!

Throwback Thursday

Since it’s the week of Dimitri’s birthday, of course we have to do a post about when our sweet little boy was born. I will never forget that morning. Kasi still had about a week before she was due, so imagine how surprised we were when we got a call early in the morning saying that the baby was coming!  Adam was in school, and we had joked with Kasi just a few weeks before that she better not have the baby early because Adam had finals. Well, Dimitri certainly had a mind of his own and didn’t care if Dad had finals or not! It was a wild morning, trying to get everything put together and ready for me to make the three-hour drive to Pocatello. I was so nervous and so excited to meet this precious baby.

It was fun spending time with Dimitri in the hospital and it was so sweet of Kasi to involve me in lots of the “mom” things like giving him his first bath. I visited for a few hours, and then Dimitri, Kasi, and Luis spent the night in the hospital just the three of them. As excited as I was about this little baby, I wanted them to have as much time as they could to be together so I was happy to stay at the hotel and come back the next morning.

When it was time for Kasi to be discharged from the hospital, I will never forget the feeling I had when she lovingly placed Dimitri into my arms. It is a feeling that I don’t think anyone can comprehend if they haven’t experienced it. A perfect mixture of joy, sorrow, gratitude, and overwhelming love. We are so thankful for having this little boy in our lives. When I think of how much unselfish love Kasi must have for our son, I always think of what Elder Holland said about moms.

Adam met us in Pocatello later that day, after his finals were over. Of course, we had talked on the phone multiple times and I had sent him about a hundred pictures, so I’m not sure how well he did with concentrating on his tests. But we were sure glad when had got there. Because of laws involved with taking a baby out of the state they were born in before you have official custody of them, we stayed in a hotel in Pocatello for about a week. What an adventure being brand-new parents to a brand new baby in a tiny little hotel room. We loved every minute of it.

Throwback Thursday

This is a throwback to when we were foster parents. Exactly four years ago, we were asked by our foster care coordinator if we could take a newborn baby home from the hospital. Of course we said yes! We can still remember walking into the hospital unit and explaining why we were there. We had to talk to a social worker. We had to wait a few minutes while they made sure all the paperwork was sorted out. We had to wait some more. We sat in an empty hospital room, just waiting. Our other experiences being placed with foster kids were different because someone always brought them to our house. Now we were just waiting and wondering.

Then we saw him. The sweetest, tiniest little man.

He stole our hearts the minute we met him. We were his parents for the first two months of his life.

After those first two months, he went to live with his grandparents who adopted him, and we know that’s how it was supposed to work out. Even though we weren’t meant to be his forever family, I know we were supposed to be in each other’s lives. Lucky for us his parents have made it very easy and fun to stay in touch.

This is the first time we saw Chance after he went to live with his parents.

Summer Fun

Last week my mom watched Dimitri and his cousins Parker, Lawson and Cade were there as well (my sister Ginger’s boys). Every day since Dimitri saw them, he has asked multiple times for “Pahka Lawson.” If I say it’s time to go, he asks if we’re going to their house. If I ask him if he wants to go outside and play, he asks if Pahka Lawson are coming too. It’s pretty cute. On Friday we wanted to go swimming so we decided to see if Parker and Lawson could come with us.

We went to a park that has these fun little streams for kids to play in. The kids had a lot of fun. Of course, you also have to get ice cream on such a hot day.

Hooray for summer, cousins, water, and ice cream! I hope you were able to do something fun this week too!

Throwback Thursday

That time we had the most amazing ice cream. In this picture, we are at Edaleen Dairy. It’s a famous dairy in Washington, near the city where Adam grew up. It’s right by the border of Canada, and it’s so popular that people cross the border just to get milk and ice cream from this place.  The first time Adam took me to his home town, he said we had to visit the dairy so I could taste the best ice cream ever. I thought he might have been exaggerating. but he wasn’t! Yum! We are planning to go visit Adam’s parents sometime soon, so it will be fun for Dimitri to have his first taste of Edaleen Dairy ice cream.

Riding the Train

Dimitri is really into trains lately. We live fairly close to a Trax station, and whenever we drive by it,  he gets excited wondering if he’ll see a train. He calls all trains “Salty,” which is the name of one of Thomas’ train friends on the cartoon Thomas and Friends. It’s so cute to hear him ask, “Is Salty coming?” as we drive by the Trax station.

On Saturday we decided to take Dimitri for a ride on “Salty” and he was so excited! We took the Trax downtown and ate at one of our favorite restaurants.

We had a great time spending the afternoon together and Dimitri is so excited that he finally got to ride the train! Did you do anything fun this weekend?

Throwback Thursday

That time my sister Vannessa and I did a triathlon!  It was just a sprint triathlon, so we swam 600 meters, biked 12 miles, and then ran a 5k. Not as hard as a full triathlon, but it was still a lot of work. Considering I barely know how to swim, it was quite an accomplishment. I have always liked to run, and since I met Adam have enjoyed biking every now and then. But I have never been a swimmer and had definitely never gone swimming on a regular basis until I started training for this. But I actually really enjoyed it! Unfortunately, it was an all-women event, so we couldn’t actually do the triathlon together. But as you can see I had my sister there with me so that made it fun.

I haven’t done much swimming since this, but right now I am training for a half marathon. Maybe in the future, I’ll do another triathlon.
